PHOENIX magazine – Raising Phoenix
Article Summary: What to Do When Your Favorite Artists Break Bad. It focuses on the Fortoul Brothers, beginning with the fact that I gave my parents a print of theirs for Christmas last year — and now I’m trying to figure out what to tell them to do with it.
Concept ideas: This could show one of their murals slowly fading with them in front of it. Or we could show one of their artwork in someone’s home or office, and the person is removing it from the wall?
PHOENIX magazine – Lost at Home?
Article Summary: Lots of attention has been focused on people with disabilities who live at institutions, in the wake of the Hacienda case (where a woman gave birth to a boy on New Year’s Eve — she has very significant disabilities) but the truth is that about 90 percent of people living with intellectual disabilities in the state of Arizona actually live at home.
Concept ideas: This one should have a tad of controversy and tragedy in it. The boy in the wheelchair is a good start. His home is doubling as a treatment facility. His parents as a caregiver. We can have the mom caring for her son, helping him with something, rather that be feeding him, combing his hair, wiping something off his face. You can run wild with what comes to you as an artist.
PHOENIX magazine – Tooth or Dare
Article Summary: The story is pegged to recent news accounts of two women who ran an unlicensed dental practice in the West Valley. Writer will plumb that story, and reference other similar crimes in the Valley involving spurious doctors and health providers, and examine the safeguards put in place by medical boards to prevent such things from happening.
Concept ideas: (you do not need to use these, they are just to help get you going) two women acting as dentists, working on a patient, towering dark shadow lurks behind/above them for opener; big grin with black teeth (one of the dentists’ is smiling obnoxiously bit in her mugshot, the blackness could symbolize her malice); maybe a small police line-up of masked “doctors”.
The Q – Envisioning the Driverless City
Article Summary: After years of research, the era of the driverless car is headed to a city or town near you.
Concept ideas: Illustration of the new Google driverless vehicle. Keep it simple.
